6 Ways to Manage Stress for Pets During Holiday Parties and Gatherings

The holiday season brings joy and excitement, but it can also be a stressful time for pets. From the hustle and bustle of guests to unfamiliar sounds, daily routine can get thrown off and many pets experience anxiety during festivities.

Luckily for you, there are a lot of ways you can help make the season more enjoyable for your pets. Here are a few tips on how to keep them calm and comfortable while you celebrate.

Create a Safe Space

For pets who might feel stressed or overwhelmed during holiday gatherings, having a designated quiet area is key. This could be a separate room or a cozy corner with their favorite blanket, toys, and a water bowl. If your dog is crate-trained, a crate can serve as the perfect safe zone. Dogs often see crates as their personal, secure space where they can retreat from noise and activity.

If you’re new to crate training or want to learn more about making it a safe, positive experience, check out our blog on Crate Training: Establishing Rules and Structure for a Well-Behaved Dog. Using the crate as a refuge during gatherings can help them feel more at ease, knowing they have a familiar, quiet place to go when things get busy.

Maintain Their Routine

While holiday schedules can get hectic, try to keep your pet’s routine as consistent as possible. Regular mealtimes, walks, and play sessions provide a sense of normalcy and help alleviate anxiety. If your holiday plans make it difficult to be home at regular times, consider hiring a pet sitter or dog walker to make their days easier.

Minimize Loud Noises

Holiday music, laughter, and even kitchen clatter can be overwhelming for pets. Keep the volume low and, if possible, limit access to noisy areas. For extremely sound-sensitive pets, soft background music in their quiet area can provide a comforting buffer.

Gradually Introduce Guests

If your pet is uneasy around strangers, introduce guests gradually. Let them approach your pet slowly, and reward calm behavior with treats. Remind guests to respect your pet’s boundaries.

Incorporate Calming Aids and Special Treats

The holiday season can be overwhelming for pets, so a few extra steps can help keep things calm and enjoyable for them. Consider using calming aids like anti-anxiety medication, pheromone diffusers, and maybe even anxiety wraps. This can help pets who are sensitive to loud noises or crowded gatherings. It’s also important to keep an eye on holiday décor and treats around the home. Be mindful of where you place items, and ensure treats meant for guests are out of reach.

To make the experience enjoyable, offer your dog special holiday treats they can safely enjoy while you celebrate. This reinforces a positive association with the season, helping them feel included and relaxed. Plus, when done each year, these small gestures can make future holidays easier on both you and your pet!
